Past Work

Barry Herem has produced many originals and exclusives in numerous mediums as partially referenced in his artist's biography. Some are fairly large (15 to forty feet) for public or corporate spaces), the majority have been private works in the two to eight-foot range. Most of the works here are explained or self-explanatory and although all are true originals many could be somewhat duplicated or varied for any given client, civic, corporate or private. Nevertheless, none would ever be perfectly reproduced by the artist himself. All are automatically copywriter under US copywrite law.

Discussion of any similar work along the lines of work seen here is encouraged.

Metal Work

Formline work as such (Northwest Coast Indian Art), and as discussed, is essentially two-dimensional, i.e. flat design and, by Northwest Coast art affecinados, is often referred to simply as "flat design". Thus, so far, most of Herem's work in steel and aluminum plate concentrates on the kinds of curvilinear designs - laser cut on a flat plane - that are most identifiable as Northwest Coast in style. It's a new and permanent way to create this art form and can be effective enhanced with powder-coated paint (paint applied with heat for a baked-on surface, as with cars). Usually, however, Barry finds that it's hard to improve on the varied and variagated rust surface achieved with steel, cor-ten steel in particular.

Cor-ten, or C-10 Steel

It is also known as exterior architectural grade steel. This is an alloy specifically designed to take the weather and not rot or rust through if kept out of standing water. Its first monumental use in public sculpture was designed by Picasso and stands 30-feet tall in a downtown Chicago plaza, an inspirational work to Barry. He has worked with metal for 20 years and produces the patina (surface treatment) on each piece. Most for-ten.

Stainless Steel and Aluminum

Most of Herem's flat design work can also be done in stainless steel and/or aluminum plate. Both are about one quarter more expensive than cor-ten steel. However aluminum is much lighter in weight and can be annodized. Stainless steel can be brought to a gleaming surface or given the kind of disc-ground swirled, patterned or faceted surface treatment often seen in stainless steel public sculpture. Stainless is also usually cut in 1/8 inch thickness (verses the usual 3/16 cut of both cor-ten and aluminum plate).

Bronze work is another matter. Herem has done many fully sculptural works in bronze, and is always involved with both the mold process and in the finished look.
